WIPpet Tuesday??!!

Yes, yes, yes – I know I’m getting earlier and earlier with my WIPpet Wednesday posts.  And technically it’s still very much Tuesday here in the not-so-sunny 😦 UK.

But I’ve got a good excuse – I’ve got an early start (for me anyway) for work tomorrow and I tend to find if I don’t post my contribution to the wonderful WIPpetness of Wednesday early, I end up posting them late.  And not to put too fine a point on it, I get knackered.  I like to be able to take my time in reading all your wonderful excerpts too.

That’s it.  That’s all the justifying of myself I’m going to do!  Back to my WIPpet post.  For what will be this Wednesday, the 26th March, I offer you 23 words from my new WIP.  My WIPpet maths goes like this: 26 – 3= 23.  I started writing it on the 8th March and I’ve done well over 4000 words so I’m happy! 😀

I guess many of you can manage a whole lot more than that in that space of time, but it’s a lot for me! BTW the ‘she’ in question is my MC Rebecca and she’s part way through her first day as a teacher at a secondary school (for 11-16 year olds).  So here’s my snippet:

Feeling a need to freshen up, she headed for the nearest staff ladies.  When she reached it she found two other women there.

There.  I’m being stingy with the amount I’m sharing, but I haven’t written much so I don’t want to share too much at this stage.

If you’ve taken a look at what us WIPpeteers are sharing and would like to get involved, just post on your blog anything you’ve written lately.  Make sure it relates in some way to the date.  Then add your name here.

Thank you K. L. Schwengel for hosting. 🙂

    • Yes it is. I must admit that it always amuses me how you Americans delicately refer to it as the bathroom! Over here ‘bathroom’ is specifically the room with the bath/shower as well as toilet. We refer to the ‘ladies’ or the ‘gents’ or the toilet or the ‘loo’. And if we’re being especially coarse or a bit crude we call it the ‘bog’! Hope that’s enlightened you on the subject lol!!

      • We have been known to call it the Women’s Room as well. Since most of our bathrooms include the toilet as well…I guess we just named it after the largest piece of porcelain! 😉

  1. I have to ditto both of Xina’s comments. Early is fine. “staff ladies” made me do a double take. I’m guessing all the UK folks will chime in, telling us that’s a totally normal term. 😉

  2. Just think of it as posting on Australian time! I know I’ve posted Thursday mornings before and argued that it’s still Wednesday in most places. 😉

Reading the comments above mine, “staff ladies” made perfect sense to me, but I think it needs an apostrophe, since it’s short for “ladies’ room” or words to the effect? I hope these two women are nicer to Rebecca than the guy in the Audi!

  3. Hm, I wasn’t confused at all by “staff ladies.” When I worked at a school, we used to call it the “staff ladies room” to distinguish from student bathrooms. I just read it as a shortened form.

4000 words is great! I started my new one back in February and only have 8000 words or so. These things can’t be rushed. 🙂

  4. lol It strikes me as funny that you should choose a heading-to-the-loo scene for a teaser. I can only assume that something the two women mention or do will turn out to be important later. Now I’m perched on the edge of my seat, all eyes, anticipating a bathroom scene next week. :-O

  5. I do that late thing way too often — I should start shooting for Tuesday too, I think. 🙂

The “staff ladies” tripped me up briefly too, but I think all you have to do is add “room” as others have suggested to bring the Americans on board as well.

    • Yes thanks for that Ruth that’s helpful. As for late v early, I tend to be way too early for appointments and things like job interviews – my husband finds it amusing, but the thing is I hate being late and I’m always worried if I don’t get somewhere early then I’m going to get there massively late!

  6. haha no excuses necessary, and that’s a lot more than I’ve written in the past 4 months!!

I’m waiting for the gossip, for the evil/dirty looks, waiting for the “what are you doing here?” asked in a snarky voice! Good lead up to making me want to ask a whole lot of questions.

    • Actually these people are gonna be nice to Rebecca, but she has just had a run in with a nasty bloke (guy) in an Audi, so she deserves a break!

Thanks for the encouragement re my word count etc. Hope you’re having a good week. 🙂

  7. The trip up was brief. I’d never heard the shortened form before, but a staff ladies’ room is common enough, even here in the US.

4000 words is a great burst. You probably reached the number of words I’d written on my WIP this month, and I was plugging away as hard as I could. Sometimes the words are… stubborn.

Women’s lounges can be a source o great conversation and human behavior. It’ll be interesting to see what what you do here, Elaine.

    • Thanks for your encouraging words Eden. I do like the way certain words and phrases can get lost in translation between countries, even between those that speak the same language! It makes for an interesting life anyway lol. 🙂
