Pondering – WIPpet Wednesday

Hi everyone, hope you’re having a good week so far. I’m getting back to doing more  work on my writing than I have been. I managed over 1100 words on my WIP Teaching Mr Leavis yesterday which is good for me. 🙂

What’s not so good is that  I can’t access Facebook on my laptop at the mo. It keeps telling me there’re no posts to show and that I should find some friends. The cheek! I can get it on my tablet and my smart phone so you might think it’s my laptop that’s the problem, not Facebook. But actually my husband helped me rejig the internet yesterday and it’s still not working.

All the other sites I use are working so I’m fairly sure it’s not my problem. Sort yourself out Facebook! *shakes fist in the air* If any of you are having problems with Facebook too please let me know.

Anyway thankfully I can still access WordPress which I’m glad about. So I can share with you my contribution to this week’s WIPpet Wednesday. My maths is simple as always. I’m sharing with you 23 sentences – 24 for the day minus 1 from 2014.

In this excerpt from Teaching Mr Leavis, a romance about a teacher,  my MC Rebecca is cycling to the school where she works, going over recent events in her mind…

The alarm woke Rebecca with a start. She almost leapt out of bed with shock. Rubbing her eyes she pressed the off switch, wishing she could stay in bed. Was it really Monday already? Where had the weekend gone? It was definitely Monday though; the weekend was well and truly over. Feeling woolly headed as she got ready to cycle to work, Rebecca found herself yearning for a coffee. But there was no time.

Out on her bike, cycling away from her flat towards Wyncliffe High School, Rebecca found the cool air whipping across her face soothing. Then thoughts from her eventful weekend began to invade her mind and she felt less settled. In spite of her best efforts, she found herself thinking about Jonathan Leavis. He was certainly an enigma. Then again so was Nick.

Rebecca recalled his behaviour over the past month or so. When she’d first started work at Wyncliffe he’d been so attentive to her, so kind. He’d made her feel that he felt something for her, and she’d certainly been attracted to him. But he’d never said anything; he hadn’t done wrong by her. She hadn’t exactly had her heart broken.

Thinking about it as she powered up the final hill towards the school, Rebecca found herself becoming convinced that Nick’s distance towards her lately had something to do with his argument with Jonathan. Something had happened between the two men to make them want to duff each other up. But what? She decided she’d try and grill Nick about it today. If he’d talk to her that was.

    1. Thanks Charles. So FB is always causing trouble is it? Not just me then? I’ve never had a problem on it as bad as this one. 😦
      My husband thinks FB is a load of… fill in the blank. 😉 Although he’s not on FB he’s very good with computers and just thinks it’s badly set up. Right now I agree with him!

      1. They definitely changed it to a point where it’s a chore. Last I heard you only see the posts of people you interact with. So those you don’t say hi to fade away. Not sure what their goal is. To make social media infinitely less social?

      2. I wish I knew what FB’s goal was. Right now it seems to be to annoy me! Checked again just and it’s still not working. Other people have suggested uninstalling FB but I don’t know how to do that.

        Hubby is very techie as I said and we did actually reboot Chrome on my laptop, but it didn’t make any difference. I’m hoping that it’ll clear up by itself but I’m not holding my breath!

      4. I had it back but it’s gone again! Aaargh!! Glad I’m not the only one having trouble with it, though as I said it’s the main page that won’t load. Hope you can get your author page back soon.

  4. Nothing like a good bike ride to clear the head and think. Although, thinking is sometimes a bad thing. At least for me! 😉 And I love the phrase ‘wooly headed’. How perfect for Monday morning. And Tuesday, and….

    I’m not having FB problems but I am having Firefox problems on my laptop all of a sudden. I think I need to uninstall and reinstall, then hit with a hammer, dance around the laptop three times counterclockwise under a full moon, and chant something. Maybe that will work for FB, too?

      Glad you appreciated the excerpt. I think we all need that space to clear our heads sometimes. I find taking the dog for a walk in the park across the road helps me.

  5. I would be so much more productive if Facebook didn’t work on my computer…

    I like the snippet. At the beginning of the third paragraph I wasn’t sure which guy she was talking about, Nick or Jonathan (because it said she was thinking about Jonathan Leavis, but the thoughts following were about Nick). Moving “than again, so was Nick” to the next paragraph would clear that up for me, as Nick becomes the new topic.

    Just thought I’d mention it. Not sure if you’re at that stage yet. 🙂

    2. Hi Kate. You know it’s funny you said that cos as I was posting this, this morning, I did half wonder if it could be a bit confusing which guy she’s thinking about. But I left it cos I thought it probably made sense! Thanks for flagging it up though – I will admit to being a bit sloppy sometimes.

      And I totally understand re the typo not grammatical error!! I do that occasionally and I think ‘aargh I’m supposed to be good at not doing typos!’ cos generally I’m not that bad. 😉

      2. They can be hard to spot lol. I guess that’s what editors are for. I’m quite lucky cos generally I do spot them and people have commented on how clean my manuscripts are. But it’s not always easy – I still miss some sometimes.

      3. The typo conversation has me giggling…I tend to have typos when I use my phone (not to mention stupid autocorrect). The other day, I accidentally sent a winkie smile to a guy I barely know. He’d messaged me with an article to read, I said thanks, and…dang winike instead of normal smiley. I had to apologize for coming across as creepy. LOL! (Mercifully, he understood.)

  6. Ugh on not getting Facebook on your laptop! Technology is a necessary evil as they say.

    And poor Rebecca. Ugh. I’m not a fan of Mondays or any day without coffee. I hope she can get some coffee and answers soon.

    1. She does! I want some answers though from FB!!!!! Just tried loading the home page again. It’s showing my link to this blog page but nothing else. Aaagh!!

  7. Hmmm, my Facebook seems fully functional, so I’m not much help there. This WIPpet makes me really curious about the scenes before and after, though! What made her weekend so eventful? How is the confrontation going to go? What was the argument about? It’s really good set-up…and makes me want to go cycling a little, too, lol.

    1. Oh I’m so frustrated, I can’t tell you!!! I was fiddling around with FB and I managed to get the home page back for a little while but it’s gone again.

      Anyway thank you for your comment. I’m glad you’re intrigued. 🙂 This book is going well but it’s going to need a BIG edit by me before any beta readers see it! I may get someone to be an alpha reader, but again I think I’m going to need to do a lot of work on it before then. Just got to finish writing the first draft… first!

      2. Tell me about it! I seem to fail regularly. I think it gets a bit easier as you get older. And the funny thing is I can stand up for myself perfectly well with close family members – as my husband will tell you lol!!! (though I guess that’s not so surprising.)

  9. Well, if you’re more productive when you aren’t on Facebook then it could be a good thing but if you just keep trying to make it work and end up spending less time writing, then it’s bad. As for the WIPpet, as always, very nicely done!

  10. Ugh…Mondays, no coffee, and the real-life problem of FB not working. Bad all around!

    I agree about the confusion over who she’s thinking about. I was a little thrown when I realized she was talking about Nick. Otherwise, this is an interesting plot twist. I wonder what has the two men at odds.

    1. Yeah Mondays suck! Facebook is kind of working for me now, but I often have to go to my personal page or my author page and then back to the main page to get it working properly!

      Point taken re POV. I will work on it! Glad you liked it. (it’s less intriguing if you’ve read some of the earlier scenes, but I’m not letting you in on those hee hee!)

    1. Thank you! No I’m not with TalkTalk. I think I realise what might have happened to me with FB – I was trying to navigate the home page with my author account and it wouldn’t let me, would only show what I’d posted in my author account. Oh well. You live and learn.
