I hope you’ve all had a good week. I’ve been doing some Christmas shopping, some online some in regular shops. Thankfully I don’t have too many people to buy for so that’s good for me!
Anyway on to the main event on my blog today: WIPpet Wednesday. Seeing as it’s the eleventh of December today, I thought I’d share with you 10 lines from chapter 12 of my current WIP Reunion.
Only 10 lines? I hear you ask. OK 11-1 = 10 and I just felt the extract works better without the extra line. It follows directly on from last week’s WIPpet post. A week has passed since Anna’s run in with Will and she’s sitting comfortably on the sofa in her best friend’s new house, thinking about what happened.
Anna closed her eyes as she was sitting on the sofa of Melissa’s front room, basking in the warmth of the new house. It was now Friday evening. In less than a week Melissa had managed to get most of her belongings packed away. Although she’d told Anna she wanted to do some decorating, to make her mark on it, the house was pretty much up together now.
Anna was unsurprised. Melissa always had been organised. She’d been in her new house for a week now. And almost a week had passed since Anna’s run-in with Will yet she couldn’t stop thinking about it, trying to make sense of it. Why was he stalking her? Was he obsessed with her?
So if you want to take part in WIPpet Wednesday just post on your blog an excerpt of whatever you’re currently working on writing-wise that relates in some way to the date. Then hop along to this linky and add your name.
Thanks goes to K. L. Schwengel for hosting. 🙂
I’ll take that extra line. I need more space for mine. 😉
This snippet makes me want a new house to unpack into. A warm one. *shivers*

You’re welcome to it. 😉
It’s quite cold here in the UK too, though could be a lot worse. Hope you warm up soon!

This line threw me, “the house was pretty much up together now. ” Other than that, nice scene setting and internal musing over dear ol’ Will. *cough-stalker-cough*

OK, forgive me for being ignorant, but the line that threw you – was it lost in translation (so to speak) between UK English and US English or did it just not make sense?
Yes plenty of internal musing going on here. Thankfully Anna has a breather from seeing Will for a while – a short while anyway!

“pretty much up together” I’m going to guess from your questioning of my question, it’s a UK vs US translation issue because that snip doesn’t make sense to me no matter how many times I read it. I know what you mean from the context it’s in.

Lol. Beta readers rock don’t they? 🙂

‘Questioning of my question’ – would make a great line in a novel lol. Anyway, yes from what you’ve said it sounds like a US/UK English muddle. But you’ve got me wondering now, I’m going to check that it does make sense in UK English and that it’s not me writing something that doesn’t make sense anywhere!

I sometimes toss in lines that are family phrases or local terms that no one outside of SE Wisconsin would understand. Thankfully, there’s always at least one Beta who will throw out the challenge flag

Less than a week? Can she come organize my house? LOL.

Maybe I haven’t given her long enough to unpack but I’ll ask her if she’ll come and organize yours!! 😉

I also wonder why Will is stalking her! Can’t wait for that to be revealed!

Well seeing as you asked so nicely… maybe I’ll reveal a little more next week! 🙂

I think the no duh answer to Anna’s question at the end is DUH! yes, he’s obsessed–why else would he be stalking her.
I agree with Kathi about that one line. Other than that–great excerpt!

Yes maybe the question at the end needs cutting. Have asked Kathi in my comment above about what she meant. It may be that an expression like that makes less sense to you guys in the US. I’d be interested to know.

We would say “house was made up” or “she got the house together” bug not use both “up” and “together” at the same time.

OK. Don’t think that would be an issue over here but it’s worth thinking about and maybe tweaking for my American audience!

Easy maths.. The average of 12 and 10 is 11. You didn’t need to fudge anything, Elaine.
I can’t speak for Anna, but if I were her, I would go on the offensive, as in hunt up Will and get the confrontation done and over with (in a very public location, of course).

I’m not sure if you have this expression in the US, Eden, but when I was at school maths was my bugbear i.e. I hated it. This’ll make you laugh: when I was at secondary school we had a system of maths teaching called ‘Smile Maths’ where we’d be given a worksheet number and we’d collect the worksheet from the back of the classroom and work on it. Anyway my mum still laughs about it cos ‘Smile Maths’ made me cry!!
Anna sort of confronts Will later on. It’s complicated… Hope you’re having a good Wednesday and that you’re not too cold! 🙂

If someone was stalking me it’d play on my mind too. Glad she’s somewhere safe and cosy. I’m intrigued too about why Will’s seemingly stalking her.

All will be revealed! All right – I lie, not everything otherwise that would give the whole plot away!! Glad I’ve intrigued you anyway. 😉

I think it’d be terribly scary to have a stalker! Poor thing.
As far as your other post about the ups and downs of self-publishing, I totally hear you and hope you get some good encouragement soon!

PS- I’ve heard Goodreads reviews are almost always lower on average than amazon ones.

Thanks for that Alana, that’s helpful and interesting about Goodreads. Anna gets over her ‘stalking’ but it’s not an easy road for her! Is it ever for our characters?! 🙂

Hi Elaine – I’m a fairly new WIPpet member trying to get oriented and maintain productivity. 🙂
I understand that you made this graphic: https://elainejeremiah.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/wednesdaybanner.jpg?w=300&h=171&h=171. I wonder if you mind if I also use it?

Anna’s very introspective, isn’t she? Here she is, visiting with a friend, and she’s stuck on Will. 😛 Although, I have to admit, if I thought I had a stalker, I’d probably be stuck on a not-so-merry-go-round of anxious thoughts myself. Poor Anna. 😦

You’re right about Anna she does brood rather a lot! I’m making it hard for her, but isn’t that what we all do to our characters? 🙂

Of course! Otherwise our readers would be bored. 🙂
